All Work and No Progress

Have you ever ridden a stationary bike? You can pedal as hard and fast as you can, but you will never get anywhere at all.

Lately I have been feeling like that in a particular relationship. I feel as if I have been putting everything I can into this relationship, but I have nothing to show for it. I feel like I am riding a stationary bike in this relationship, working hard but not getting anywhere.

A particular talk this weekend at General Conference helped me feel better and worse about this relationship. Worse because it pointed out all the things my relationship doesn't have, and that was frustrating. But at the same time, I was comforted and reminded that if I do my part I will receive every blessing Heavenly Father has promised me, even if it isn't in this life.

What do you do when you feel like you are riding a stationary bike in regards to some aspect of the gospel? How do you keep pedaling when it feels as if you are going nowhere? Don't you get tired? Don't you just want to get off the bike and give up?

  2. I never thought of it that way but it's a perfect description. I think I tend to just take a break, put it on the back burner so to speak and work on something else. During the break the spirit can take over and make progress (or not) but when I come back to it I have changed and either know more or see things differently. Relationships are the same way, to take a break means to stop trying so hard and just relax and accept. I believe our progress is never steady; we climb up a steep part and then have a plateau which after a while feels like we're not moving, then another steep climb up again to the next plateau. Or something like that. We just can't ever give up. But we can turn things over to the Lord and let him take over since he's so much wiser than me.

  3. I think what helps me is reflecting on what I have been blessed with during the time I was "on the bike" and try and remember how far I have come. Stronger muscles are built when we add resistance to a workout. So even though we may be struggling up those "hills" we gain so much strength from them! Also going to the temple always give me a big boost to start over, get it together, and always do better!
